SHILLONG:  Police arrested a couple after a late night raid in a government quarter in the city  led to recovery of more than 2000 ml of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL). The couple was suspected to be involved in illegal selling of liquor.

Personnel from Sadar Police Station on late Friday night raided a quarter inside PWD complex near Barik Point after receiving inputs that liquor was being sold in one of the quarters inside the complex.

During the raid, a couple was caught red handed by the police while selling liquor. They were identified as Bhalang Lamare (45) and Phatik Deka ( 57). Police recovered total volume of 2315 ml of IMFL from their possession during the raid.

According to police, Phatik Deka works as a roller engine driver in PWD and they were misusing government property by indulging in illegal selling of liquor.

A case under Meghalaya Police Act is being taken up by the police where a fine of Rs 5000 each will  be levied against the accused, if proven guilty in the court of law.

The Sadar Police in the past had launched a massive crackdown on  illegal selling of liquor in Keating Road areas  where one woman was arrested on three occasions. Police claimed that the  business of illegal liquor stopped completely  in the area after repeated arrest of the woman.

Police have requested public to share information prompt if they witness any such illegal business taking place in city areas.
