Three injured in separate road accidents
SHILLONG: Several cases of hit and run have been reported from different parts of the State. On July 27 around 3 pm, one unknown motorcycle knocked down one Pynbiang Lyngdoh at Marngar in Ri Bhoi. Victim sustained injuries and was shifted to Bethany Hospital, Nongpoh. Matter is under enquiry.On the same day, one jeep (ML-05A-0955) dashed against one scooty (ML-05Q-0667) ridden by Pascal Kurbah (20) at Mawngap. As a result, the scooty rider sustained injuries and was admitted at NEIGRIHMS.In another accident, an unknown vehicle knocked down Mahesh Kalita (42), driver of Mahindra Xylo (AS-01AL-2828), while he was checking the light of his vehicle at Mawtnum in Ri Bhoi. Victim sustained injuries and the matter is under enquiry.

Miscreants damage Jio cable, threaten staff
SHILLONG: Digvijoy Borgohain of Reliance-Jio Infocom Limited Iewrynghep, Fire Brigade, lodged a complaint that between June 29 and 30, unknown miscreants have cut and damaged the underlying cables of Jio network at Hopkinson Road, Laitumkhrah. A threatening SMS was also sent to the complainant, which is suspected to have been done on the instruction of the malevolent party.

Verification sought from DMC on allegations against school head
TURA: The president of the Matri Mangal Girls’ SSA Upper Primary School at Moulakandi in West Garo Hills has in a letter, urged the District Mission Coordinator in Tura to verify certain allegations made against its headmaster.The SMC president sought that the alleged manipulation of the teachers by the headmaster and subsequent submitting of a teachers’ list without the knowledge of the SMC to the office of the Block Mission Coordinator (BMC) under Selsella Block is verified.Verification on the actual qualification of the headmaster was also sought in the letter.

Extortionist group nabbed
TURA: A senior member of the defunct outfit A’chik National Liberation Cooperative Army has been arrested along with three of his accomplices from Williamnagar in a joint operation by police from East and North Garo Hills district early Thursday morning.The self-styled leader of the group (ANLCA) Mithun Momin hailing from Kharkutta region was seized from a house he had rented in the heart of Williamnagar town. Along with Mithun three of his criminal partners, Chengchak G Momin, Chingsan M Marak and Nasiruddin Marak were also arrested although no weapons were recovered. Garo Hills police reveal that the group had been instrumental for quite some time in serving extortion notices to businessmen and petty traders at several places in the east and northern districts and many of the victims had negotiated with the gang and paid to their demands over fears of reprisals.

Dacoit gang busted in East Garo Hills
TURA: East Garo Hills police have busted a gang of criminals who have been spreading fear among villagers located in the Chiading area of the Jengjal to Williamnagar national highway sector.The gang which had been involved in a string of extortion and dacoity cases in the region was busted by police during a raid on Rongchekgre Chambugong village under newly opened Chiading police station. Following a tip off about the presence of a group of armed criminals in the village, police raided the place and nabbed four young men from a village.

FSS organises concert featuring yesteryears’ artistes
SHILLONG: The Fashion Society Shillong is organising a concert on Saturday. The concert will be conducted under the theme Rewind: Songs Down Memory Lane, an oldies concert featuring senior musicians of Shillong. Artistes like Headingson, Phom Lyttan, Therisia War, Halcome Tariang and contemporary artistes Colors, 4th Element, Barry Mawthoh, Adoralyne, Ooto Garage and many others will perform. Wanisha Lyngdoh Pyrbot, Advisor of FSS speaking to The Shillong Times said, “Our aim is to give new platform to these old musicians as music of their generation hadreal purpose and meaning”. Headingson, who grew up listening to the gramophone and All India Radio said, “This is the best platform to revive oldies music, and we are grateful to FSS.” The concert that will be held in U Soso Tham Auditorium, featuring songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s with covers of great artists and bands like Abba, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Carpenters, LynyrdSkynyrd, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, Paul Anka, Chicago and others.

CRPF celebrates its Raising Day in Tura
TURA: The 78th Raising Day of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was observed at its 120 Battalion headquarters in Tura with the Inspector General (IGP) of north East Sector Prakash D, IPS, together with the battalion commandant B.C. Dalbehera and other unit officers paying homage to the martyred brave hearts of the unit.A two minute silence was observed as a mark of respect for those jawans and officers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.A presentation of arms was given to the IGP by the ceremonial guard of the unit at unit Quarter Guard where a newly hoisted CRPF flag was also unfurled. In his speech, the IGP praised the unit personnel stationed in the Garo Hills for their success in various competitions of the force, particularly in shooting and QAT competition in the sector and Zone.

NEEPCO organises Hindi workshop
SHILLONG: A one-day workshop on Hindi was organised for the employees of NEEPCO with faculty assistance of Bijendra Singh, Regional Director, Central Institute of Hindi, Regional Centre, Shillong at North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), Corporate Office, Shillong on Friday. The programme was attended by Anil Kumar, Executive Director (HR), NEEPCO, S.L. Dowerah, Deputy General Manager (HR), B.K. Tigga, Sr. Manager (HR) OL, NEEPCO. The programme started with the welcome address by Arun Pradhan, Hindi Officer followed by the address of Anil Kumar.

BSF seizes cattle 
SHILLONG: The BSF in its Anti-Smuggling drive seized 53 cattle worth more Rs 10 lakh in Nayabazar and Lyngkhat, East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The 444 kms Indo-Bangladesh border with Meghalaya State interspersed with riverine, dense forests and hilly terrains which provide ideal conditions for cattle smuggling. The BSF troops are heavily engaged in curbing this menace which has suddenly increased in Meghalaya since last few months. All the seized cattle were handed over to concern department for further legal action.

Disaster preparedness meet
NONGSTOIN: A two-day workshop on   ”Preparation of Village DM Plan and Early Weather Warnings on various hazards” for Village Heads, Block Functionaries, Gram Sevaks and Gram Sevikaswas was organized by office of the Block Development Officer Mawthadraishan C& RD Block in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority,(DDMA), Nongstoin on  July 27 and July 28. L.K Diengdoh, BDO Mawthadraishan C & RD Block asked the participants especially the village heads to prepare the Village Disaster Management Plan and village disaster response teams

Awareness on crime against women, minors
NONGSTOIN: The Community Awareness programme on crime against women and children organized by the Department of Social Welfare, office of the District Social Welfare Officer, West Khasi Hills and office District Child Protection Officer, West Khasi Hills in collaboration with the North East Network (NEN) was held on July 25 , at Seven Brothers Higher Secondary School, Kynshi Bangla, Mawthadraishan Block.
