GUWAHATI: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to take stock of the flood situation in Assam on August 1 , an official source here informed.
A letter of intimation has been sent from the PMO to the Chief Minister’s office here informing the state government about the visit of the PM. The details of the PM’s programme is not yet known.
The current wave of flood so far has claimed 82 lives in the state and devastated standing crop over 2,09,051 hectares of land spread over 29 districts out of the total 32 districts in the state.
According to the latest official figures, 15,746 flood-hit people have been evacuated in 21 districts by personnel of NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, India Army, Assam Police, Forest Police and locals. Total 1,31,899 flood-affected people are still lodged in 363 relief camps that are operating in various districts of the state.
Assam government has announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia against each of the deaths caused by the flood while the Prime Minister has announced RS 2 lakh ex-gratia per flood death in the state.
“Over 1000 roads have been damaged and 184 breached. Fifteen bridges have been badly damaged, while approaches to 187 bridges have been washed away,”. The floods have also fully damaged over 3,000 dwelling houses apart from partially damaging about 23,000 houses in 29 districts in the past two months,” state chief secretary V K Pipersania informed.
Meanwhile, Assam government has sought Rs 2393 crore assistance from the Centre to take up various flood-damage repair works including major breaches to embankment caused by the Brahmaputra and many of its tributaries during the flood.
“The Brahmaputra and its tributaries have caused as many as 20 breaches on their embankments in the current wave of flood, and those needed be plugged in no time as a temporary mitigation measure to prevent further damage to the structures,” the official said.
A seven-member joint secretary level inter-ministerial team of the Central government made on the spot assessment of the flood damages in the state during July 25 to 28 The team will submit its report to the Central government to facilitate Central assistance to the state for restoration of damages caused by the flood.
