Cement firm’s green drive lauded

JOWAI: The Chairman of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), CP Marak, on Saturday inaugurated the mass tree plantation drive on ‘Vanmahotsav’ organised by Adhunik Cement Limited on it premises at Thangskai village in East Jaintia Hills.
“Last year we planted 25,000 saplings of native species in 30 minutes with more than 95 per cent survival rate by adopting Miyawaki Akhira, a Japanese method. This year we have targeted to plant more than 50,000 saplings,” Adhunik Head KA Mathew said.
Marak, who is also the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and head of the Forest Department, congratulated company for its efforts.
“You have taken up a noble initiative,” he said, adding, “Environmental issue is an interest much before it becomes a problem and therefore we need to be active in order to correct the problem immediately.”
The cement firms in Jaintia Hills have been taken up plantation drives in a bid to protect the environment in the area.
