SHILLONG: A 3-year-old girl was found abandoned on a pavement at 101 areas, Upper Shillong on Sunday by local residents who alerted the 108 ambulance that took the child to Ganesh Das Government Maternity and Child Health Hospital.

Hospital sources informed that the baby aged around 3 years was admitted in the Pediatric ward of the hospital on Sunday evening. “The baby is out of the grave danger. She was admitted in a very malnourished state,” the hospital source said.

The source added the child is kept at a unit of pediatric ward where malnourished children are given extra nutritious food. She is still under observation by the medical officer.

The SP East Khasi Hills, Davis Marak said that the girl appeared to be born to mixed parents and the identity was yet to be ascertained.

The police have written to the Chairperson of Child Rights Commission apprising her of the condition of the child.  Matter was also informed to the Child Welfare Committee.

Poverty is believed to be the reason for abandonment of the girl child by her parents.
