SHILLONG: The health department has hiked the bond amount of MBBS students to Rs 30 lakh from the present Rs 25 lakh from this academic year.
An official source said on Wednesday that the bond amount of Rs 25 lakh was fixed from 2010.
Despite fixing Rs 25 lakh as bond  amount, medical students who graduated were even willing to refund the amount as they did not prefer to serve in the State after availing of the quota or with a reason that some of them wanted to pursue post-graduate studies, the official added.
In 2016, 92 doctors had failed to report to the health department after completing their MBBS course under the State quota.
As many as 14 out of 42 doctors from the 2003-04 batch did not serve the State while the number of doctors from the 2004-05 batch who violated the bond was 16.
For the 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 batches, the number of violators was 17, 23 and 22, respectively.
