Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board accredited by NABL
Shillong: The Central Laboratory, Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Shillong has been accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) in accordance with the standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005 “General Requirements for the Competence of Testing & Calibration Laboratories” for its facilities available at “Arden”, Lumpyngngad, Shillong. This was informed by the Chairman, Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board. The certificate has been accredited in the field of testing surface water, ground water and rain water, package drinking water, waste water, pollution and environment, atmospheric pollution like ambient air, meteorological parameters, source emission and ambient noise.

MLCU signs agreement with Khasi traditional medicine commission
Shillong: A Deed of Agreement for the implementation of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Protection and Promotion of Khasi Traditional Medicine) Act, 2011, was signed on Friday between Martin Luther Christian University and the Khasi Traditional Medicine Commission of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. It was signed in the premises of the KHADC in the presence of the Chairman of the Commission Banteidor Lyngdoh, Executive Member of the KHADC, representatives from MLCU, traditional healers and other members. This agreement has been made between the two parties, in which MLCU will assist and advice KHADC on academic and research work in Khasi Traditional Medicine and for the University to provide education, conduct research, and promote Khasi Traditional Medicine. MLCU will also take the necessary measures to implement the holistic and practical aspects of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Protection and Promotion of Khasi Traditional Medicine) Act, 2011.

Controversy over school managing committee comes to a close
TURA: The controversy surrounding the School Managing Committee (SMC) of the Matri Mangal Girls’ SSA UP School of Moulakandi in West Garo Hills has attained closure with a document of the Joint District Mission Coordinator (Jt DMC) of Dadenggre being made available to this office.  Allegations and counter claims were made against each other on several occasions in the past, by those claiming to be associated with the school body. However, the document has revealed that no SMC currently exists in the school and the committee was dissolved on July 12.

BSF seizes cattle worth Rs 10 lakh
Shillong: The BSF troops deployed at Tuka in East Khasi Hills recovered 29 cattle worth more than Rs. 5.5 lakh. The cattle were being smuggled from India to Bangladesh through the unfenced area but the BSF jawans foiled their attempts. In another incident, the BSF troops at Nayabazar in East Khasi Hills also seized 24 cattle worth more than Rs. 4.9 lakh while being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. All the seized cattle were handed over to the concern department for further legal action.

‘Retain MGNREGS’
SHILLONG: The Village Employment Council (VEC) of Mawryngkneng C & RD Block has said that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) should be retained as certain villages still lacked development. This was voiced in a VEC meeting in which 25 VECs attended at the AEC Building in Smit, on Friday. The meeting was chaired by John F. Kharshiing, co-chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board. The participants of the meeting felt that given the increase in the prices of commodities, there was a need to increase wages. Kharshiing urged the VECs to make the villages ‘open-defecation free’.
