Ri-Bhoi villagers exposed to scientific bee keeping

SHILLONG: A programme on “scientific bee keeping” was organized at Nongthymmai village of Ri- Bhoi district, on Saturday by the Division of Crop Protection, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya in collaboration with the Raid Madam Kyrdem Bee-keeper Association, Nongthymmai.

A total of 159 beekeepers from the fourteen villages of Ri- Bhoi district benefitted from the programme. The day-long training elaborated on “scientific beekeeping” for livelihood improvement of farmers in Meghalaya.

The programme started with the welcome address by Stephen Shoolap, President of Raid Madam Kyrdem Beekeeper Association, Nongthymmai.  Various scientific speeches were given on bee keeping including hands on demonstrations and problem associated with the bee keeping, by the scientists of the ICAR.

Various inputs related to beekeeping such as hives, bee veils and gloves were provided to the bee-keepers.  A scientists and beekeepers’ interaction was a major part of the programme, where the queries of the bee-keepers were answered by the scientists.

The training and hands on demonstration assured that the bee-keepers to get the best out of art of bee keeping.

The programme was coordinated by Dr.Sandip Patra, Dr. DM. Firake, and Dr. Rumki Sangma, Dr. GT Behere of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam and Stephen Shoolap, President of Raid Madan Kyrdem Beekeeper Association, Nongthymmai.
