SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said on Monday broken roads in several parts of the State are inconveniencing locals and the problems will be addressed soon.
Speaking at the fifth foundation day ceremony of South West Garo Hills district, Sangma pointed out that insurgency had posed serious challenges to the development of the region in the past but “the Government has restored peace now”.
“Had we not created new districts, we would still be fighting with little time to focus on development. However, the creation of new districts has enabled police administration to carry out counter-insurgency operations in effective manner,” he said.
He assured people that the Government would continue to create avenues for the youth and vulnerable section to enable equitable growth and development of the society to make the state vibrant and set an example for others to emulate.
The celebrations were marked by a myriad of cultural dances and performances by schoolchildren and cultural troupes. It started with Ampati Run with 200-odd runners early on Monday morning.
Government Chief Whip WD Sangma and Chairperson of Meghalaya Resource and Employment Generation Council Dikkanchi D Shira and Chokpot MLA Bluebell R. Sangma were among the guests.
Chief Executive Member of the GHADC Boston Marak, Deputy CEM Wenison Ch Marak and other members of the Executive Committee were among others who participated in the celebration. The chief minister also released a booklet on ‘5 years of South Garo Hills on the march to Development and Progress’.
