SHILLONG: Meghalaya is saving 32,761 MW and Rs 13crore in a year with the distribution of light emitting diodes (LEDs) under the UJALA scheme of the Union Government, says the National UJALA Dashboard.
As many as 2, 52,263 pieces of LEDs have so far been distributed in the state under the scheme. In addition, 2,944 tube lights have also been distributed in the state leading to energy saving of 1, 28,947 KW energy per year besides a saving of Rs 4, 38,420 per year for the state.
The Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme aimed at saving precious energy was launched in the state last year.
Under the scheme, two to 10 LED bulbs, each priced at Rs 90, are given to every household. The beneficiaries have to produce their electricity bills before purchasing the bulbs.The scheme is being implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the ministry of power. It aims at promoting efficient lighting and enhancing awareness on using efficient equipment which reduce electricity bills and help preserve the environment.
The scheme aims at covering 3.5lakh households in Meghalaya and the EESL has also opened outlets in the state.
