GUWAHATI: Assam Government has decided to enhance one-time sports pension from the existing 20 to 40 sportsmen a year. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held at the conference room of chief minister’s office in Janata Bhawan here on Wednesday.
The chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal advocated for enhancement of the number of beneficiaries for one-time sports pension in the meeting where the CM urged upon all the stake holders to lend their cooperation for transforming Guwahati into the sports Capital of the country.
He also said that state government is working rigorously for developing at least 500 state-of- the-art football fields in the State for holding simultaneous matches in all the venues. This would help the government to utilise its youth energies into meaningful vocations and make them an essential component for the proposed sports capital.
Government of Assam gives regular pension to 40 sports persons with monthly financial assistance of Rs. 8000 and one time pension to 20 sports persons with Rs. 50000 each. However, the meeting held on Wednesday increased the entitlement to 40 from 20 for one time sports pension.
Chairing the meeting of the notified committee for sports pension, chief minister Sonowal said, “Sports pension to veteran sports persons who earned laurels for the state deserve our kudos and acknowledgement. Our consistent endeavour is to bring more players in its ambit and help them to take care of their future needs”.
