SHILLONG: The guard wall of the newly built road connecting Police Bazar and Polo collapsed on Sunday.
The Public Works Department (PWD) temporarily closed down the road, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on June 17, after the incident.
Officials in the district administration said the landslide occurred early on Sunday morning and debris was cleared later in the afternoon. No one was injured in incident.
The 505-meter road was built at a cost of Rs 7.58-crore.
The landslide occurred a day after three persons died when a tree crushed the vehicle they were travelling in.
Continuous rain for the past five days has wreaked havoc in capital city and other parts of East Khasi Hills.
A minor incident was reported from Lad Mawphlang on the way to Sohra where a portion of the road collapsed.
State Government officials said the Forest Department has been directed by higher-ups to identify weak trees and branches in precarious position in all parts of the city.
A review meeting at the deputy commissioner level will be held later this week to take stock of the damages and chalk out preventive measures following a series of tragic incidents in the city and on its outskirts due to torrential rain.
A few weeks back, a branch pulled down electric wires and fell on an SPTS bus and some cars near St Mary’s College.
There was a similar incident on August 10 when the guard wall of Shillong College collapsed on the road. No one was injured in the incident.
Meanwhile, a drive on the busy Shillong-Umiam Road reveals that there are several massive trees which are hanging dangerously on the road and posing a risk for commuters.
On the other hand, a weather summary issued by the Meteorological Centre, Shillong, says the city received 65.4 mm of rainfall from August 8 to 11. Sohra, the wettest place on earth, received a massive 243.4 mm of rain.
It also says heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places August 14 and 15 over Meghalaya.
