Former BSF IG passes away in Tura

TURA: Former Inspector General of the Border Security Force Rajinder K Thakur passed away in his sleep following a cardiac arrest here on Friday morning. He was 74.
Thakur, who is one of Tura’s senior citizens, had a distinguished career in BSF serving in various capacities in the North East, including Meghalaya.
He was the commandant of the Praharinagar and Dobasipara BSF battalions in Tura during the late 1980s’ and early 1990s and later went on to become a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the force in Shillong.
Later, he was promoted to senior ranks and retired as the BSF IG from Siliguri sector of West Bengal.
Hailing from the state of Himachal Pradesh, he completed his graduation from Dharamshala and joined the BSF in 1962.
He was known to be an excellent golfer. He married Anita K Sangma in 1977 and settled down in Tura where he was overseeing the construction of his home since last year.
He was due to visit his ancestral village in Himachal Pradesh to attend the wedding of his niece on Saturday.
Thakur is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
