SHILLONG: The State Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has thanked Union Health Minister JP Nadda for increasing the quota of medical seats for Meghalaya.
The ministry last week increased the number of MBBS seats from central pool to 42 from 26.
“The initiative is an opportunity provided by the central government to the youths of Meghalaya who wish to pursue their studies in medical line, especially to those who belong to low-income families,” BJYM said in a media statement.
“This will definitely solve the problem of shortage of doctors in hospitals and various health centres in the state,” it added.
The BJP youth wing also appreciated Nadda for launching several development schemes for the poor.
The Centre increased seats for under-graduates from 54,348 in 2014-15 to 65,183 in 2016-17. For post-graduation, seats were increased from 25,346 in 2014-15 to 36,703 in 2017-18, BJYM stated.
