TURA: Cabinet minister Clement Marak led a three-member team to the flood-affected plain belt of West Garo Hills on Monday.
The minister also reviewed relief work and the quality of products being distributed among the homeless villagers.
“We wanted to see how relief work is being undertaken in the flood-affected areas to ensure that there are no complaints. We inspected food items, tents and other materials,” said Rajabala MLA and Parliamentary Secretary Ashahel D Shira, who was part of the delegation.
The third member was Speaker AT Mondal, who represents Phulbari.
Large tracts of low lying areas in the plains suffered extensive damage after surging water from the Brahmaputra and the Jinjiram flowed into the region. Crops, houses and public infrastructure are damaged or destroyed.
Marak, who is an MLA from Selsella, led the team to Rajabala, Singimari, Bhaitbari and Phulbari. Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi and Dadenggre Civil SDO Ram Kumar accompanied them.
The government sent a delegation to the area last week and after a survey flood was declared.
The state BJP, meanwhile, constituted a 16-member relief and rehabilitation committee to assess the extent of damage and submit a report to the Centre for compensation.
Former MLA KC Boro will be the chairman of the committee.
Seven members will visit the flood-ravaged region for a spot verification on Tuesday.
“The team will also collect a list of affected families and submit it to the Prime Minister’s Office through the state party president to avail sanction of adequate amount as compensation for crop damage and property,” said BJP.
The party has also begun a drive to collect donations of relief material from Tura and other towns for distribution to the affected families.
