Mumbai: Snapping the losing streak of last two sessions, the BSE Sensex rose today by 33 points to end firm at 31,291.85 on fresh buying in select stocks such as Oil & Gas, Energy, Health Care, Bankex and Technology.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) also went up by 11.20 points to 9,765.55.
The Sensex edged higher by 135 points to 31,393.93 in early trade. It then rallied by 226 points to a day’s high of 31,484.28 before noon. Later, it slipped in red but managed to end positive at 31,291.85, rising by 33 points as compared to its last close.
It registered day’s low at 31,241.50, down by 10 points.
The Nifty recorded day’s high and low at 9,828.45 and 9,752.60 points, respectively.
The sectoral indices like Energy, Health Care, Bankex and Technology pushed the Sensex up. Scrips of Dr Reddys’ Lab, Wipro, Sun Pharma and Axis Bank also supported the market, however, selling in NTPC, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto and TCS capped its further gains, brokers said.
Among secondary indices, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.41 per cent. The Small-Cap index shed 0.37 pc. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.
The market breadth was weaker on BSE, as 1,638 shares declined while 938 others rose and 130 were unchanged.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 3,055.74 crore, compared with a turnover of Rs 3,953.29 crore registered during the previous trading session.(UNI)
