Constable awarded medal for meritorious service

Shillong: In recognition of high sense of dedication towards duty and discipline par excellence since 16/07/1990, the Hon’ble President of India has awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service to Matilal Basumatary, Constable (GD) of North Eastern Police Academy, Umsaw, Meghalaya, during the occasion of 71st Independence Day on August 15.

Illegal collection of taxes going unnoticed in Ampati

SHILLONG: Congress MDC from Boldamgre in South West Garo Hills, Stevie Marak has alleged that Ampati police has failed to stop the illegal collection being undertaken by a lessee of Ampati bazaar.
Marak said that the matter of illegal collection was brought to his notice by the people of his constituency that the lessee of Ampati bazar had been illegally collecting taxes higher than the amount specified in the lease with the GHADC.
Upon investigation, it was found to be true and an FIR was lodged at Ampati police station with evidence to stop further tax collections by the lessee until an EC meeting at the GHADC will decide the course of action and a notification in this regard.
He said that despite the FIR, there was no action from Ampati police station and the illegal collection continued in he had to file a follow up FIR.
He said, despite two FIRs the collections are continuing with the Officer-in-Charge of Ampati police station citing that “the police have no power to stop the illegal collections”.
