SHILLONG: The construction of the new assembly building at Mawdiangdiang will begin soon as the Meghalaya Assembly has called for tenders.
Speaker AT Mondal said pre-bidding will be held on August 30 and the last date for submission of bid is September end. He is optimistic that the construction work will begin soon.
Earlier, nine of the 11 shortlisted consultancy firms had given their presentations for the new Assembly building.
After the heritage Assembly building was destroyed in fire on January 9, 2001, there was undue delay of 16 years in constructing a new building.
The Assembly functioned temporarily from State Central Library after the mishap but currently all business is transacted at the Arts and Culture building in Rilbong.
Though several locations were identified for a new building, proposals could not materialise. Finally, the government has decided to construct it at Mawdiangdiang.
