SHILLONG: Four meat shops at Polo were removed by the Shillong Municipal Board on Wednesday to pave way for the construction of the Polo market complex.
Earlier in 2014, the government has heaved a sigh of relief after the civic board and the East Khasi Hills district administration demolished several shops at Polo following a High Court verdict.
The occupants of these four shops were earlier asked to shift to temporary stalls till Tuesday evening for their safety as the foundation of the new market will be till the edge of the shop.
Later, all the vendors who have been removed from the place would be provided with a place, once the new Polo market is complete.
However, the occupants of these shops did not comply with the request of the municipal board.
The Polo market is part of the proposed Shillong square and all the vendors who were asked to leave the place will be rehabilitated in this segment of the market.
The National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) is implementing the project and the civic board is the beneficiary as the particular land where the market is coming up belongs to the Board.
Earlier, the Centre had earmarked a total amount of Rs 23 crore for the project.
