Lapang honoured for doctorate degrees

NONGPOH: The Women Organisation of Ri-Bhoi District (WORD) on Thursday felicitated Dr DD Lapang, the chief adviser to the government of Meghalaya, for achieving honorary doctorate degrees from various institutions in the country.
The organisation led by JJ Kylla, along with other prominent leaders of the district, organized the programme under the banner of DD Lapang Felicitation Organising Committee.
A former chief minister of Meghalaya, Lapang had received four doctorate degrees from various institutions in the country for his contributions to the society and its development in his career spanning several decades.
Church leaders, officers, politicians and prominent leaders from across Ri Bhoi district besides school children attended the programme held at NSCA Mini Stadium here.
Speaking as chief guest, Dr Ken Gnanakan, chancellor of William Carey University, Shillong praised Dr Lapang for having served the district and the state throughout his life and wished that he continued to serve the people of Meghalaya.
Dr Gnanakan handed over a citation to Dr Lapang on behalf of the felicitation committee.
Rev. ER Tongper who attended the programme as special guest also recalled his association with Dr Lapang in his early days during Bible study at Qualapaty, Shillong.
Meai Dibahun Blah, the granddaughter of Dr Lapang, in her speech, expressed her gratitude to the organizers and the people of Ri Bhoi for their continued support to her grandfather.
Students of various schools also performed traditional dance of Ri Bhoi during the programme.
