SHILLONG: Advocate General BP Todi and officers from the Health Department are camping in Delhi to file a petition in the Supreme Court after the Assam Government denied 10 medical seats to Meghalaya students.
With uncertainty over seat allotment due to legal tangles in Assam, the state government has no other option but move the Apex Court, an official said.
When contacted, the additional chief secretary in charge of Health, PW Ingty, said on Sunday that officials and legal experts from the state are already in Delhi to pursue the matter legally.
“We are committed to ensuring that the future of the selected candidates who are mostly toppers are not affected,” Ingty said.
The students from Meghalaya, who were selected under NEC quota, were to start their classes from September 1, but the legal issues over allotment of seats to OBCs in Assam delayed the process.
Concerned over the issue, UDP legislator Titosstarwell Chyne said the delay in getting admissions in various medical colleges in Assam will only bring undue hardships to the selected Meghalaya students.
He said that as the Supreme Court had allowed only till September 7 to complete the process of admissions in Assam, the Meghalaya students will be at a loss if the state government does not file the case in the Apex Court immediately.
