SHILLONG: The Supreme Court hearing on the denial of admission to medical aspirants is on September 11.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Roshan Warjri said on Tuesday the case was filed on Monday and the Meghalaya Government has also prayed for inclusion of Medical Council of India (MCI) as a party to the case.
Every year, four seats each in Guwahati Medical College and Hospital and Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh and two seats in Silchar Medical College and Hospital are allotted to Meghalaya.
Warjri said the state government pays Rs 10 lakh for each medical student. “The problem cropped up because no communication was received from the Assam Government regarding their new rule,” she told reporters.
However, the denial of seats to 10 students this year has come as a surprise since there was an agreement signed between both the states regarding allotment of seats.
It was only when the students went to join the colleges that they were informed that there were no seats for Meghalaya this year.
Officials of the Health department on Tuesday apprised Chief Minister Mukul Sangma of the case in the Apex Court.
On being asked if the filing of the case would further delay admission of the affected students, Warjri said the government had no option even though the matter has been taken up at all levels.
The last date for admission of students was August 31 and now the Supreme Court will take a call on the matter.
Earlier, Warjri met the aggrieved students and parents and reaffirmed that the state government is doing its best to address the problem.
