Shillong police proposes for 30 more CCTV cameras to check crimes

SHILLONG: Following the recent murder of a women vendor  in Police Bazar, Shillong police have  initiated steps to get 30 more CCTV cameras in different locations in the city.  The police have also urged the vendors to be  careful besides urging the shopkeepers to install CCTV cameras in their vicinity.

Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday, SP (City) Vivek Syiem said that the hawkers must be careful since they used to do their business till early morning.

Stating that the police is analysing the CCTV footages to get   more details of the incident, Syiem also informed that a proposal to install another 30 CCTV cameras in different strategic locations of Shillong has been submitted to the State Government.

He said that the CCTV cameras would be of   great importance   to deal with cases of   burglary, crime against property and even traffic management.

He said that the shopkeepers should install CCTV cameras in their entrance facing outside and even police could assist the shopkeepers as far as placement of the   cameras were concerned.

On the murder of the vendor, he said that police were investigating into the incident from all the   angles   and police would ascertain if there was a sexual assault or not on the women after getting postmortem report.

He also said the case was being treated as special report   case under the direct supervision of the SP office even as he added that   as of now there was no prima facie evidence or pointers to indicate that her husband was also involved in the murder.

The 36-year-old woman vendor identified as Anjana Sinha was murdered in Police Bazar around 1.30am on Sunday and she used to sell fast food items on Keating Road. Anjana had injuries on her neck and face.

Anjana, who was an active member of the Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association, had been running the stall for the past 13 years. The couple had two sons, one is studying in Class XI and the other in Class VII.
