SHILLONG: The Congress in Williamnagar has gained two members, one a former NPP legislator, under the leadership of local MLA Deborah Marak.
Jonathon Sangma and Marcus Marak, both of whom contested the 2013 elections unsuccessfully against Deborah, joined the party on Saturday.
While Jonathon contested as Independent, Marcus was an NPP candidate. Both the leaders along with their 500-600 supporters joined the party during a youth convention held in Williamnagar.
Deborah later said more supporters would join her shortly.
BJP-NPP targeted
The minister, while addressing the East Garo Hills convention organised by the district youth Congress committee on Saturday, said people in Garo Hills region could not find a suitable party other than the Congress. The education minister targeted BJP and its NDA ally NPP.
Deborah said, “We elected an MP on emotional grounds after the death of late PA Sangma but emotional decisions don’t last. It is unfortunate that NPP has aligned with BJP and now it remains a mute spectator to the atrocities being meted out to the minorities.”
She also said a party like the saffron entity does not have any place in a democratic set-up.
