SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has expressed satisfaction that the necessary tasks related to the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Mawphlang have been carried out and the pending work would be completed within reasonable time.
In this connection, the Court has disposed of the PIL filed by State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) chairperson Meena Kharkongor.
Kharkongor had in the PIL brought forth the sufferings of the students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Mawphlang and that they were not shifted to the newly built permanent campus.
The PIL stated that the students were forced to stay in absolutely uninhabitable conditions due to apathy on the part of the respondents.
It was also pointed out that the authorities had failed to attend the essential requirements, including requisite water supply for the newly built campus.
The Court expected from all concerned, including the state government that necessary remedial measures would be taken without further delay.
The Court further stated that on May 23, 2017, it was given out that the work of laying necessary pipeline had commenced and was likely to be completed within a week.
The Court expressed concern over the delay and issued notices to the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) after it noticed that there were other requirements of necessary repair work of the building by the CPWD.
The Court stated, “Then, on August 24, 2017, it was given out that though the water supply pipeline had been provided but it was not of adequate size and with extra intake of students, the water supply from the given pipeline would obviously fall deficient of the requirements. Learned Government Advocate was granted further time to complete his instructions as also to advise all the concerned appropriately.”
On Tuesday, it was given out by the counsel for the respective parties ad idem that the necessary work of providing adequate pipeline has been completed.
It is also given out that so far as other civil works by CPWD were concerned, the repair of the main school building has been carried out and the civil work relating to staff quarters is under way and would be completed soon.
