SHILLONG: A female patient who was admitted along with her newborn baby in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of hospital here in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The 25-year-old woman had delivered the baby, with a low birth weight, elsewhere.
“The case is still under investigation and we will ascertain the actual cause of the incident,” East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Davis Marak, said.
Kawal Krishen Pandita, the public relations officer of NEIGRIHMS, said the deceased was identified as Eugene Syiem from Ri Bhoi district. The official said the baby is in a critical condition and under observation in ICU.
Sources said the woman was admitted in the institute on Monday after she delivered the baby somewhere else and it appeared that she was mentally disturbed due to the low birth weight of the child with around 1.9 kg.
The SP said the police would examine as to how the woman could so easily get access to the roof of the hospital.
“We will examine all angles during our investigation,” Marak said.
