EJH drivers help cops control traffic
JOWAI: The East Jaintia Hills Drivers’ Association (EJHDA) has donated 10 “no parking stands” to Ladrymbai Police on Wednesday in a welcome gesture aimed at controlling the menace of haphazard parking along National Highway 6. As a matter of fact, the drivers’ association has for the past few months helped the Ladrymbai Police in traffic management in the area in the wake of unauthorized parking of vehicles along the national highway, which has caused inconvenience to commuters. The association had recently rented a parking lot in Ladrymbai in order to help drivers of local taxis and tourist cabs plying in and from the area to park their vehicles,” EJHDA president Happy E Rymbai said.
CM opens tribal boys’ hostel in Tura
Tura: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma inaugurated the newly-constructed Windham Tribal Boys’ Hostel on the Harding Theological College campus at Edenbari near Tura on Wednesday afternoon. The hostel, covering a total area of 2500 sq.ft, was constructed at a cost of Rs 1.29 crore, although it was estimated at about Rs 6 crore, according to Principal Imnanungshi Imsong. Sangma donated Rs 39 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Rural Development Fellowship (CMRDF) Programme. Stating that the best outcome of any initiative is a result of a government-organisation partnership, Sangma also proposed organising agro-farming and agro-entrepreneurship programmes in the college. The inauguration was also attended by local MLA and Parliamentary Secretary Noverfield R. Marak and West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi, among others.
USTM conducts third convocation
SHILLONG: University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) conducted its third convocation on Wednesday on the university premises at Khanapara. Altogether 905 degrees were conferred which included two PhD, 742 post graduate and 161 undergraduate out of which 17 post graduates and nine undergraduates received gold medals. The event was graced by M. Jagadesh Kumar, vice chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jayant M Modak, Deputy Director of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, G.D Sharma, vice chancellor of Bilaspur University, PG Rao, vice chancellor of USTM and Amarjyoti Choudhury, CV Raman Chair Professor at USTM.
BJP youth wing in Mowkaiaw
JOWAI: The BJYM, a youth wing of BJP, was formed at 4 Mowkaiaw and 3 Raliang constituencies on Wednesday in the presence of district youth president, Arborlang Nongsiej, vice president, Heiborki Suchiang, and former MLA, ECB Bamon. The youth wing of the BJP-Mowkaiaw will be led by Rihok Miki Rabon as the president, Chi Ryngki as the vice-president and Jingthmu Law as general secretary.
Don Bosco organises
Youth Retreat
TURA: Don Bosco College, Tura organised a three-day youth retreat from September 8-10, for college and high school students of Tura. The event held at the newly constructed Don Bosco Hall was led by Dr Jayanand, founder of ‘Jesus Cares Ministries International’, and his team from Bangalore assisted by a Jesus Youth team from Shillong. As many as 400 students participated in the retreat. The college intends to make the Youth Retreat an annual event.
Awareness on crime against women, kids held
NONGSTOIN: A one-day workshop on Crime against Women and Children” was organised by One Stop Crisis Centre ‘Iohlynti’, a joint effort of the Social Welfare Department, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya, North East Network(NEN), Ganesh Das Hospital on Tuesday. The chief guest, B. Ranee, EAC, lauded all the agencies involved and the college for taking the collective responsibility in sensitising the youth on crimes against women as well as to help foster a more supportive environment for uniform and accurate implementation of policies and laws related to women and children. The programme was organised in collaboration with Nongstoin College under Equity Initiative, a RUSA funded project and was chaired by Rangksan Mawroh, Principal Consultant, RUSA Cell. The resource persons were, MA Kharbhih, DSWO, Keshav Lamsal, KRIPA Foundation, T. Kyndiah, District Child Protection Officer, S I Kharmyndai, Police Department; CID, Shillong and JA Marbaniang of OSC Iohlynti.
Hindi Pakhwara begins today at NEC
SHILLONG: The North Eastern Council (NEC) will celebrate Hindi Pakhwara at its auditorium in Nongrim Hills from September 14 to 28. Several events for promotion of Hindi language will take place, where Ram Muivah, IAS, Secretary, NEC will inaugurate the event at 3 pm on September 14. In implementation of Rajbhasha Adhiniyam 1963 of Home (Official Language) Department, Hindi has been accepted as the official language of the Union Government. The Parliament had adopted Hindi written in Devnagari Script as the Official Language on September 14, 1949 and since then, the day is celebrated as Hindi or Rajbhasha Day throughout the country.
Ri Bhoi school celebrates golden jubilee
NONGPOH: The Golden Jubilee celebration of Ri Bhoi Presbyterian Higher Secondary School in Nongpoh, which started on May 27, concluded on Wednesday in an event held on the school premises. Chief Adviser to the government DD Lapang attended the function as chief guest and Extra Assistant Commissioner and District Coordinator of SSA-SEMAM Ri Bhoi, DD Syngai graced the function as guest of honour. Ri Bhoi Presbyterian, which was set up as a lower primary school in 1967, has now expanded to the higher secondary level and is one of the most reputed schools in the district. Lapang lauded the achievement of the school and encouraged the students to “dare to win” by citing examples of the achievements of great leaders. He also released the school souvenir. Meanwhile, with crimes against school children being on the rise, Syngai suggested the school authority to provide a safe environment for children.
Sikh awareness camp extended
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has decided to extend the two-day camp to sensitise the community on central and state schemes for minorities. In a statement released here on Wednesday, DSGMC President Manjit Singh GK and General Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa said there was overwhelming response to the camp in Assam and Meghalaya. Sirsa said Singh Sabhas in different states can approach DSGMC if they want to organise such camps in their respective areas.
