SHILLONG: The advancement of information and technology has made many youths knowledgeable and informative yet they lack true information.
This was the observation made by L. Roy, the chairman of Meghalaya Private University Regulatory Board (MPURB) during the celebration of the 95th foundation day of Laban Bengali Boy’s Higher Secondary School on Wednesday.
“Today’s youths are a privileged lot. Information and knowledge is not a problem in the present age but today’s youth are troubled. They lack true information despite having access to technology. They are informed but not educated,” he said.
Expressing concern in this regard, he said there was something wrong with the world today with the growing threat of unemployment and population explosion. Roy further pointed out that India would exceed China in the years to come in terms of population.
Quoting Swami Vivekananda who said, “Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested, all your life,” he said, education should make a person stand on his/her own (feet) and ingrain a sense of confidence in people.
Commenting on the school, Roy said it has reached academic excellence in spite of the improper infrastructure.
But he was optimistic that financial assistance of Rs 3crore from the Asian Development Bank would ameliorate the condition of the school.
He also lauded the contributions of the Bengali community to education in Meghalaya.
Renowned educationist and former principal of Shillong College, MPR Lyngdoh, while speaking on the occasion, asserted that the responsibilities of teachers have increased because of challenges faced with advancements in technology and growing impact of social media.
The school also distributed prizes among meritorious students during the function.
