New police station
SHILLONG: The Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Home (Police) Department informed that the Government of Meghalaya has created a new Police Station at Diengpasoh in East Khasi Hills District to be known as Diengpasoh Police Station. Upon creation of the said police station, the areas falling its jurisdiction will cease to be under the Rynjah Police Station. The villages under the Diengpasoh Police Station include Sohlaper, Mawiong, Ummir, Mawsharoh, Mawthumthum, Ryngksaw, Diengpasoh, Jaroit, Mawkhanu, Mynriang and Nonghali.
Independent candidate joins Cong
SHILLONG: Jimmy D. Sangma who had contested the last general election to the state legislature as an Independent in Tikkrikila LA has formally joined Congress with his supporters of more than 4000 at the BCC (I) office recently.
MPUF critisises Khliehriat MLA
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Peoples’ United Front (MPUF) has criticised Khliehriat MLA Justine Dkhar for his reaction to their RTI. MPUF said that the MLA has no authority to release or implement MLA scheme and stated that he did not read the guideline of the Special Works Rural Programme (SWRP). It may be mentioned that MPUF brought out an RTI on the anomalies of implementation of SWRP scheme.
Army recruitment at city college
SHILLONG: A guidance and career counselling on career in armed forces was organised by St. Anthony’s college NCC under the aegis of NCC Group Shillong where Col. Rajeev Bagga, Commanding Officer of 41 Meghalaya Artillery Battery NCC attended as the guest speaker. At his speech, Col. Bagga encouraged the NCC cadets and students of St. Anthony’s to take up career in Armed Forces and also talked about the services rendered by the force to the nation. ‘’ It is a matter of pride to join Armed Forces,’’ he said. He also gave instructions to the students on how to face the Service Selection Board(SSB) interview and various tests such as written entrance test and medical examination. This was followed by an interactive session in which the cadets and students raised their queries.
Garment exhibition organised
Tura: The first ever exhibition cum sale of garments produced at the Training and Production Centres in South West Garo Hills, Mahendraganj – From The Hills was inaugurated by Pravin Bakshi, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills on Friday at SMELC, Dakopgre, Tura. The programme was organised by Voluntary Association for Social Upliftment (VASU) in collaboration with the Department of Commerce and Industries, Government of Meghalaya. In order to create employment in this backward region of South West Garo Hills district, the Production Centre at Mahendraganj has currently employed the passed out trainees of Tailoring and Apparel Making conducted by VASU at Ampati and Mahengraganj. VASU in collaboration with the District Commerce and Industries is in the process to set up another production centre at Ampati to utilize the trained personnel and provide employment opportunities. The centre is being run by Shabnam Mohan Raj, President, VASU.
Durga Puja preparation in Tura
TURA: Preparations are already underway for the smooth and peaceful celebration of this year’s Durga Puja in Garo Hills and the Central Puja Committee (CPC) has been coordinating with different puja pandals and the District Administration to ensure that the festival is a success. In Tura alone, there are a total of 24 Puja Pandals while the entire Garo Hills has around 110. The Beldalpara and Milan Sangha puja pandals, both in Tura will be celebrating their Silver and Golden jubilees respectively this year. The Silver Jubilee celebration of the CPC, Meghalaya has already begun with ‘Shantiyogya’ which was held in Shillong followed by various other programmes.
New WGH block begins to function
TURA: The new community and rural development block in Demdema, West Garo Hills, began to function officially from Thursday. It was inaugurated by Assembly speaker and Phulbari MLA Abu Taher Mondal. Mondal, accompanied by Sericulture minister Clement Marak and parliamentary Secretary Ashahel D Shira, visited the new block to oversee the first day of work in which staff from Selsella and Dadenggre blocks have been brought in to start the working process. The new block, near Phulbari, will cater to the entire Phulbari constituency inhabitants, half of Rajabala constituency and portions of Dadenggre block. The existing Selsella block will cover the remaining Rajabala areas and the entire Selsella constituency.
KSU academic award
NONGSTOIN: The KSU Nongpyndeng Unit on Friday organised the 3rd Maitshaphrang Acedemic Award for 16 students and one PhD scholar of Mawkhlam and Nongpyndeng area including 16 students who finished their SSLC and HSSLC examination with good percentage and one PhD scholar in Mathematics who finished his research work recently. Daniel Khyriem, Ex- President KSU Central Body attended as the chief guest.
Foundation stone
Nongpoh: The villagers of Umling will finally have access to better drinking water supply as Chief Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya, DD Lapang laid the foundation stone of the Rs. 4.60 crores Umling Water Supply Scheme funded under the Minimum Need Programme (MNP) on Friday. He was accompanied by the Minister incharge PHE, Celestine Lyngdoh. Speaking at the function, Lapang said that it was indeed a memorable day for the residents of Umling village and exhorted the gathering to work together with officials and members of the village durbar for smooth implementation of the scheme
Lyngdoh in his speech praised PHE officers for doing their part in providing better drinking water for the people of Ri Bhoi District. The minister also urged the public to refrain from burning of forest and cutting of trees for their self interest in order to preserve the natural sources of water. Earlier, members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council staged a protest near the venue to press for their 13 point demands to the Government including implement of Inner Line Permit. Members of the council said that they will continue to stage protest whenever an MLA or a minister attends a function as long as their demands are not fulfilled.
Golden Jubilee celebration
JOWAI: Kiang Nangbah College celebrated the last day of its Golden Jubilee flag on Friday. The chief guest, Celestine Lyngdoh, Minister of Printing & Stationery Department – Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) furled the Golden Jubilee flag of the college in the presence of MP, Vincent H Pala. Pala assured the Kiang Nangbah Government College Students’ Union (KNGCSU) that a bus will be provided to the students of the college while Lyngdoh also assured the union of adequate water supply in the college.
Rally against drug abuse
Ampati: Hundreds of students, teachers and government officials braved the scorching sun and joined the rally to spread awareness against substance abuse and illicit trafficking at Ampati on Friday. Spearheaded by the District Social Welfare Officer, Ampati, the rally is a part of the series of awareness campaigns being organised in the district of South West Garo Hills since the month of June, last to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking. The participants marched through the thoroughfares of Ampati carrying placards to send a strong message against abuse of and illegal sale of intoxicating substances.
