Cyclonic storm leaves a trail of destruction in Ri Bhoi

NONGPOH: Several houses and standing crop were damaged to a great extent when a cyclonic storm accompanied by heavy rain lashed several villages in Ri Bhoi district on Sunday evening.

The cyclonic storm accompanied by heavy rainfall also caused extensive damage to horticulture crops like banana plantations, betel nut trees etc., in many villages in the district.

Some of the most affected villages include Jowe, Pahamjri, Marmain, Pahamrioh. Many affected villages were yet to be reported.

A resident of Jowe village, Everwell Syiem informed that the cyclonic storm accompanied by heavy rain had not only damaged several house in the village, but also betel nut, bananas trees causing severe loss to the villagers.

Many tall trees were razed to ground by the cyclonic storm though there was no report of ay loos of human life so far.  Even a big tree at Nongpoh Police station also was uprooted by the cyclonic storm and in this incident a Gypsy of the Nongpoh Police Station was partly damages.

One Maruti Swift bearing registration number AS 01X 3656, and driven by one Md Riadul Hogue dashed the barricade along the NH-6 at Jyntru village in Ri Bhoi district and then overturned during the storm causing injuries to the driver and 6 others onboard the vehicle.

The vehicle was travelling to NEIGRIHMS in Shillong from Guwahati. Ri Bhoi police who rushed to the spot, shifted the injured to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for treatment.
