SHILLONG: In a major boost to the Congress in Ranikor, several members of the United Democratic Party, including one of its founding members K Lyngkhoi, joined the national party on Tuesday and pledged support to the incumbent MLA Martin M Danggo.
Speaking to mediapersons after joining the party, Lyngkhoi who was also a treasurer of UDP, recalled that there was a misunderstanding as far as selection of candidates was concerned in the regional party during the 2014 MDC elections after which they decided to leave the party.
“We have decided to join and strengthen the Congress party in Ranikor constituency,” he said, adding that they would soon call a meeting where their supporters would also join the Congress.
Asked about Congress’ chances in the constituency, he said prospects of the sitting MLA was bright and they would further strengthen the party there.
Danggo however said he still saw the UDP as a strong opponent in the elections.
“Though I never tasted defeat but I always welcome anyone who wants to join the fray,” he said.
He futher said the BJP was not a threat. The BJP is likely to field its state mahila president Pelcy Snaitang to contest from Ranikor.
K Lyngkhoi had contested the 2008 Assembly elections against sitting MLA Danggo from the erstwhile Langrin constituency and he stood second with 5026 votes whereas Danggo had secured 9100 votes.
