SHILLONG: Flaying the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) over allegations of corruption, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), which is the youth wing of the state BJP, have demanded the Chief Minister and his Cabinet ministers to resign.
The BJYM staged a protest against the “corrupt regime” of the Congress government at the Additional Secretariat parking lot on Wednesday.“If Mukul (Sangma) is unable to serve the people well, we demand that he along with his Cabinet ministers should resign and give way to others who are yearning to serve the state and its people,” BJYM president Egenstar Kurkalang told reporters.
Kurkalang further alleged that the youth witness corruption in every department of the government and the autocratic rule of the state government which also dictates its officers, adding, “They won’t tolerate it anymore.”
“The autocratic rule of the state government has shaken the rights of the youth, who deserve government jobs, and the rights of the poor,” he added.
Enumerating the anomalies in government functioning, Kurkalang said that education was at an all time low in the state. He said 900 teaching posts were still left vacant and the scholarships of students from 2014 have not been released.
Kurkalang said the assurance of the government to establish an engineering college should be fulfilled or else the chief minister and his Cabinet may resign.
He also alleged that nepotism and favoritism in the appointment of teachers is common and demanded for transparency in various government departments.
Criticising the then education minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who has all along denied her involvement in the education scam, Kurkalang said, “The CBI report revealed her name. How can she wash her hands clean (of the scam)?”
In this connection, he demanded the resignation of Lyngdoh and Sangma and give way to others who want to serve.
“Due to corruption plaguing the state, we are prompted to come out to the streets to demand a change. We want a government that is more youth-friendly and serves the people well,” he said.
He said the state needs representatives who are honest and focus more on development.
BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh said, “We want the government to be a government for the people…. which will bring development. The state government is not people friendly… we want a government where people can trust the administration.”
The leaders also criticised the government for the absence of a medical college in the state.
