TURA: Preparations are underway by the 30th September Victims’ Solidarity Forum to observed the 12th Memorial Special Service in honor of the 9 martyrs who died during police firing while protesting the alleged bifurcation of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) in 2005.

On that fateful day protestors had gathered at Chandmary Playground in Tura and Rongrenggre School Playground in Williamnagar when police resorted to firing at both places after the crowd turned violent. While four people fell to police bullets in Tura, five others were killed at Williamnagar.

Since the incident, organisations from Garo Hills like the GSU, AYWO, ADE, FKJGP-GHZ, FAF, TGCSU, PGSU and other civil societies and student bodies under the banner of the 30thSeptember Victims’ Solidarity Forum have been observing the occasion every year with a special prayer service.

“It is one of the darkest days in the history of Garo Hills which can never be forgotten. 30th September will always be remembered and the victims honored with great respect. This year too we are organizing the 12th Memorial Special Service in their memory,” said Adinson Ch Momin, the General Secretary of the forum and former president of the AYWO.

The memorial service will be held at Chandmary Playground in Tura and Rongrenggre School Playground at Williamnagar. In Tura, the memorial service will begin at 5 pm and people have been requested to attend the programme.
