Timber smuggling bid foiled by EGH police

TURA: A police patrolling party from East Garo Hills in the wee hours of Monday morning have managed to seize a consignment of timber which was being smuggled possibly to Assam by a gang of timber smugglers.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) in charge of East Garo Hills, R T G Momin, the patrol team had set up a check point at a location on the Jengjal-Samanda road when they saw a vehicle approaching from the Samanda side.

The vehicle stopped some 300 metres from the checkpoint on seeing the police team and when police rushed towards the vehicle, the occupants jumped out and fled into the jungle under the cover of darkness. The incident had taken place at around 2:49 am.

Later, police were able to seize 15 pieces of eight feet long Sal logs along with the vehicle, a Tata DI bearing registration number AS 18 C- 1578.
