SHILLONG: Police are on the hunt for a UDP leader caught in the CCTV footage of damaging the same camera installed at the Congress party office in lower Mawprem in the wee hours of September 17.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Davis Marak said the UDP leader, identified as Gerald Shullai, was involved in the incident in which the CCTV camera at the party office was damaged.
“He is absconding. But his family members came to the police station and assured they would cooperate to bring him back,” Marak said.
Two others along with Shullai were also involved in the incident.
Congress ticket aspirant Mohendro Rapsang had lodged a complaint that three miscreants involved in the incident were caught in the CCTV footage on September 17.
The following morning, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the residence of West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh, at Lumkshaid, in Lower Mawprem at 4.48 am.
Subsequently, Michael Pakyntein, the supporter of a Congress ticket aspirant, was arrested as the prime suspect in the case and also for intimidation following a Facebook post against the legislator.
Shillong police has intensified security in Mawprem.
He said the police have intensified patrolling in the area as there was some political rivalry which led to violence earlier.
“We feel the area is a little sensitive and hence we have given additional security to the MLA,” he said.
The local authorities earlier also held meetings with the district administration regarding security in the area and they were urged to install CCTV cameras in the locality.
