JOWAI: As part of the World Tourism Day celebration, the office of the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner in collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong of Mutong village has observed the day by organising the ‘Moopun Waterfall Festival’ at Mutong village – a village that can be projected as one of the tourist destination in the District.
During the celebration, Deputy Commissioner MS Lhuid inaugurated the Moopun Waterfall Park which was constructed by the villagers funded by the office of the Community and Rural Development, Khliehriat through MGNREGS, the District Administration and the Basin Development, Khliehriat unit.
The 12 lakhs (approximately) tourism project was completed in less than a month due to the active participation by residents of Mutong village (Job card holders).
In the inaugural function, headman Helping Phawa said the dream of the people of San Shnong area including, Pynthorsale, Mukhaialong, Mutong, Cham Cham and Lumshyrmit have become a reality.
“The Sanshnong area has lots of beautiful places that can attract tourism not only from various states of India but also from abroad. We have the Moopun Waterfalls, the Sahksaw- a beautiful river side, the Kai Langdong and the famous Rynji falls”, Phawa said.
In his speech, Lhuid informed that the District Administration has take initiative measures to boost tourism in the entire of East Jaintia Hills District in order to uplift the living standards of the people.
The celebration also included activities like photography, swimming, archery competitions and cross country run.
MLCU celebrates
The Department of Tourism and Travel Management, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), celebrated World Tourism Day along with the rest of the world by organising an Indigenous Food Festival in the University’s premises under the global theme of ‘Sustainable Tourism: a Tool for Development’ on Wednesday.
The event was graced by chief guest, former Home Minister and former Vice Chancellor of MLCU, RG Lyngdoh. Also present on the occasion was the Registrar of the University Marina B Marwein, Director HR Albert Lyngdoh.
