SHILLONG: The city police are all set to intensify patrolling along with CCTV surveillance during night hours in the wake of rising cases of rash driving.
Police sources said there was no point deploying traffic personnel late at night when there was literally no traffic and that the job of the traffic police was basically to regulate traffic.
The Shillong Police is also taking the assistance of CCTV cameras in the city to rein in rash drivers late at night. However, the police would face a challenge since the entire city is yet to be covered by such cameras.
A man was killed and three others, including a year-old infant, were injured in a case of rash driving on Saturday night.
Raj Kishore Singh, 31, who was declared dead at Civil Hospital, was riding a motorcycle (ML 05 M 7422) when a speeding red Maruti Zen coming from old Cherra towards MES hit the two-wheeler, which thereafter lost control and dashed against a tree on the left side of the road, police said. The same vehicle has also hit a scooty that night, injuring three of a family, including a year-old child.
Speaking on the matter, SP (Traffic) NK Syiem said the police was trying to locate the vehicle that hit the two-wheelers.
In another instance of rash driving of late, a speeding vehicle was seen on MES road late at night. The occupants of the vehicles were both boys and girls, who were suspected to be in an inebriated condition.
