SHILLONG: A section of the residents of Diengpasoh have urged the Police department to discontinue on-going construction of Police Station at Diengpasoh as the plot of community land was given for the station by the Sordar Shnong of Diengpasoh, Gordon Wahlang, without holding any consultation with the residents at the Dorbar Shnong meeting.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Sidramon Mukhim, a resident of Diengpasoh said that the construction of the police station was in progress as chief minister “Mukul (Sangma) is in a hurry to inaugurate it on October 10.”

She added that it was on September 18, that the residents noticed some Police personnel who were present at the construction site.

“We asked Wahlang about the matter but he did not give a clear answer on how the Police department got hold of the land. We met some officers from the department who told us that the department was able to acquire the land through a gift deed given by the Sordar,” Mukhim said.

She stated that the executive committee of the Dorbar Shnong had requested Wahlang to convene a meeting which was not heeded by Wahlang.

“The executive committee has nothing to do with the matter. The members of the executive committee have asked us, women and young people to go forward in the matter,” she said.

She said, “We are not against the setting up of Police station in the area but the agreement should come through a proper channel.”

According to Mukhim, it was in 2016 that the then Sordar of Diengpasoh, Maswell Kharumniud, had consulted the people over the NOC asked by the Police Department over the land.

“At the Dorbar meeting the residents unanimously disagreed to give away land without any compensation,” she said.
