MAWKYRWAT/AMPATI/TURA: Twinly Shylla is the oldest person living in South West Khasi Hills and might be the oldest in the state. Her wrinkles rarely show any pride of wisdom and instead a smile that brightens up her face.
The 102-year-old woman wore the same smile when she accepted the honour conferred on her by the District Social Welfare Officer on the occasion of International Day for Older Persons on Thursday.
Another person to be honoured was 90-year-old Hosting Shylla for his lifetime achievement as Herbal practitioner. Hosting is also the receiver of President’s award in 2004.
The office organised a health camp at Photjaud War village where a total of 99 participants were registered. Tapmohkhlieh were also distributed to the participants as part of the facilitation for the older persons.
In Ampati, two senior citizens, Gospel G Sangma, president of Ampati Senior Citizens Association and church elder, and retired teacher, Deobalish Sangma, were conferred with awards as recognition for their outstanding contribution to the society, while the oldest senior citizens, Dingsin Marak (80) and M Marak (79) were also felicitated.
In Tura, an awareness programme was organised by the Tura Garo Senior Citizens Forum in collaboration with the District Legal Aid Services Authority at District Auditorium.
