Former militants lament govt’s delay on rehab package
TURA: Surrendered ANVC (B) cadres who are yet to receive their re-habilitation package have expressed disappointment over the government’s delay to act on the matter.A statement issued on Friday said that many cadres are yet to receive the package. Pointing out that these cadres are finding it difficult to start a new life, they urged the government to speed up the process of releasing the packages. The cadres have also sought the intervention of NGOs and church leaders on the matter.

PHE MR workers give govt 15 days for service regularisation
TURA: Muster roll workers of the PHE department in Garo Hills have submitted a memorandum to the PHE Minister, Celestine Lyngdoh urging him to regularise their services within 15 days.In their memorandum submitted under the banner of the All Garo Hills Muster Roll Workers Association to Lyngdoh it reminded of the notification issued by the Office Memorandum of Personnel and Administrative (B) Department where it was mentioned that ‘when vacancies in group ‘D’ post arise in the department or office, fifty percent (50%) shall be filled up from amongst the RCW’s working in the department or office’.However, not even a single RCW or MR was appointed to group ‘D’ since 1980 till date.It may be reminded that the association had submitted several memorandums to concerned ministers and officials demanding the regularisation of services. However, no difference was made with the government choosing to remain adamant. The association as a last resort has threatened to go on an indefinite cease work in all five districts of Garo Hills.

Cops arrest thief
JOWAI: Police arrested a thief, Hasaki Passah, 26, while he was trying to flee with items stolen from a shop near ICICI Bank, Iawmusiang here. The shop owner Ram Naresh Singh had immediately lodged a police complaint about the articles worth about Rs 7000 being stolen from his storeroom. The stolen items include four cartons of potato chips and one carton of light bulbs. The shop owner said he came to know about the theft after he found the main door of the storeroom broken.

Laitkor school celebrates 10-yr journey
SHILLONG: Emjay Secondary School, Laitkor celebrated ‘The Journey’ of 10 years on the school premises on Friday._Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh lauded the efforts of the school founders for having the school established in a place which is far from the hustle bustle of city life to bring education to the people in the sub-urban area.She indicated that there is “tremendous pressure” on public representatives during the time of admission to schools as most parents want their wards to be enrolled in St. Edmund’s School, St. Anthony’s School and Pine Mount School.Lyngdoh has assured the school headmistress that she will take the aspirations of the school to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.“I urge the teachers to be committed, to be qualified and it does not matter whether the salary is only Rs 5000-Rs 6000 as long as you have the desire to teach, mould and shape the students,” she said.HSPDP Nongkrem MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit has appreciated the vision of the founders who have found the heart to provide service to the people of Laitkor.“I am proud that they can rub shoulders with other schools in the state and the country,” he said, adding that parents should not only eye schools in Shillong.“Education cannot be limited to literacy but further into personality building of a child,” Basaiawmoit said.Headmistress of the school, B. Wankhar informed that the school was started with only 20 students currently the school is elevated to the secondary level.

Five hurt in road mishap
JOWAI: Five occupants of a Maruti car (ML04 C 0580) were reportedly injured, some of them critically, after a tanker truck (AS01 FC 6378) coming from Khliehriat collided head on with the vehicle on Friday. The five persons were travelling from Jowai to Mowkaiaw village.
They were shifted to Jowai District Civil Hospital, Ialong. Police later arrested the tanker driver for negligent driving.
