TURA: Members of the Mindikgre unit of the Garo Students’ Union in South Garo Hills have registered a complaint with authorities over poor quality of food supplied for infants under the government’s Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS).
Following complaints from villagers, the GSU members recently inspected the anganwadi centre of the ICDS at Mindikgre.
“When we went on a surprise check we found that the supply of food stock was unfit for human consumption. For children, it can be life-threatening,” said Grenath Sangma, president of GSU Mindikgre unit.
The students later confronted the office assistant of the ICDS programme at Baghmara about the supply of the substandard food items.
“We came to know that the food stock for ICDS was dispatched late from the office of the director and to make matters worse it was stored in the godown for a long time till orders were issued from Shillong for its distribution leading to its decay and contamination,” said the students’ body.
To make matters worse, the same materials were later supplied to the anganwadi centres for distribution.
