Meghalaya cabinet passes energy conservation rules

SHILLONG: In a bid to support the idea of energy conservation and energy consumption, the State Cabinet on Wednesday adopted the Meghalaya Energy Conservation (Energy Consumption standards for equipments and appliances) Regulations, 2017
Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma said that regulations is in sync with the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 and under the new regulation, every electrical equipment and appliances has to conform to relevant standard as approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Now with a view to reduce energy consumption and contribute towards energy conservation, manufacturing and selling of only those selected equipments and appliances which have been notified by the Central Government, would be permitted.
With this decision, Meghalaya too will be a part of the global community to bring down energy consumption and contribute towards energy conservation.
Sangma said that all the Government buildings and establishments in the state from now onwards would be installing electrical equipments and appliances which have been prescribed under the regulation.
“ We will also take measures to replace all existing appliances in sync with the specification,” Sangma said.
A notification would be issued soon in this regard.
However, the regulation would not apply for those electrical equipments which are used for agricultural purposes.
