Plan Board reviews schemes
NONGSTOIN: The members of the State Planning Board on Tuesday visited West Khasi Hills District to review the implementation of State Plan Schemes 2016-17 and 2017-18. A meeting at the DC office here discussed various government schemes and their implementation in the district. The members of the Planning Board were led by Chairman SC Marak. An interaction between the members of the Board and various head of departments was also held where they raised their difficulties in implementing schemes and delayed of release of funds by the state.The Board has assured that it would look into the matter.

Overloaded trucks prohibited
jowai: The District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills District has promulgated an order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) prohibiting plying of over loaded trucks and over loading of other materials beyond permissible limit of 9 metric tonnes through 19/7 BUG Bridge on Pasyih –Mynsoo-Mokynshaina road and Ladmukhla –Shohshrieh-Myrjai- Muphlaing road. This order has been enforced after complaints have been received from the Executive Engineer PWD (Roads) North Jowai division, and from the Executive Engineer PWD (Roads) Jowai Central division, that plying of over loaded trucks along the said roads causes obstruction, annoyance to the general public and thus may result in disturbance to the public peace and also cause damage to roads and bridges. This order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force until further orders. A prominent resident of the district said, “Instead of passing an order to prohibit overloaded trucks, the WJH Deputy Commissioner should empower full power to the District Police to check such illegal activities since the Supreme Court already has a ruling that any overloaded truck detected should be punished as per the Supreme Court ruling under the MV Act.”

Single Cong ticket aspirant
in Nongkrem
SHILLONG: John Kharshiing will be the Congress’s candidate from Nongkrem. The general secretary of East Khasi Hills District Congress Committee (EKHDCC), SG Khongiong, has accepted and confirmed the decision of the Nongkrem Block Congress Committee (NBCC) to field Kharshiing. NBCC working president Lamborsing Nongrum urged Congress members to work hard to ensure Kharshiing’s victory. Khongiong asserted that the Congress will come back to power next year as the people are wise enough to keep their faith in the party. Kharshiing, the lone Congress ticket aspirant from Nongkrem, said he would take the matter of Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement (IOA & AA) and other related matters to the Assembly if elected.

Eradication of social evils starts from home: SWKH DC
Mawkyrwat: The Joint Synjuk Seng Longkmie of Kharew, Domruah, Mawmitbah, Mawsaw and Mawsynrang village organised an awareness programme on “how to eradicate social evils” on Tuesday at Mawmitbah, 30 kms from Mawkyrwat. Addressing the participants, South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, R Lyngdoh said, “Eradication of social evils start from home,” while urging parents to spend more time with their children to prevent them from indulging in anti-social activities. She also urged them to stop judging what others do, instead they should firstly monitor and judge their own children. Meanwhile, district SP, HG Lyngdoh requested all stakeholders to cooperate with police.

DC’s transfer opposed
SHILLONG: The pressure groups comprising GSU, FAF, AIGU, AAYF and ICFS of Williamnagar have expressed displeasure over the sudden transfer of East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, H B. Marak, who was appointed only last year.“The transfer of DC from the District within a short span of time has caused hardships to people besides hampering the developmental activities of the District”, the pressure groups said in a statement. According to the pressure groups, the people of East Garo Hills are satisfied with Marak, who is doing a commendable job and hence he should be posted in the district at least three years.They also said that there should not be any hurry on the part of Ram Kumar to replace Marak.

SSA teachers demand dues
TURA: SSA School teachers from Garo Hills whose arrears for the months of July 2016 to February 2017 which have been pending have urged concerned authorities to release the same at the earliest. The teachers have also threatened to agitate over the issue and demanded the release of salary for the months of August and September before Diwali in view of the non-tribal teachers in the state. Meanwhile, the All Garo Hills Non-Adhoc Secondary and Higher Secondary School Teachers’ Association recently met Education Minister, Deborah C Marak and submitted a memorandum with a request that grant-in-aid is provided to all teachers. The association demanded that all teachers of such schools should be provided grant-in-aid irrespective of whether the institution is recognised or not. It demanded that the same financial aid should be given to teachers of Higher Secondary Schools teaching in Science, Arts and Commerce streams.

FKJGP joins age limit chorus
SHILLONG: The FKJGP Garo Hills Zone, Tura held an executive meeting here in Dakopgre on October 8. The meeting was attended by secretaries and several other members. The meeting was chaired by the party president Pritam R Marak. The members present discussed on the various issues pertaining to Garo Hills and the state as a whole. One of the main agenda was to support the issue raised by the political party KHNAM regarding the age limit in government services. FKJGP resolved that the age limit in government services must be 35 years and 5 years relaxation for tribals and 30 years for general category. It is known that as per as the recent norms in UPSC the age limit is 35 yrs. It urged the government to follow the norms set by UPSC for the larger interest of the people of Meghalaya. FKJGP also dissolved the Rongram, Selsella and Dalu circles of the party.

‘Think local for sustainability’
SHILLONG:  Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma attended the Inaugural Session of 1st North Eastern Management Association (NEMA) National Conference organised by NEMA in collaboration with the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) at the Conference Hall of USTM, Ri Bhoi on Tuesday. The two days’ conference is based on the theme,‘Think Global Act Local: Contemporary Sustainable Business Practices and Development.’ “Though addressing the issues of globalisation is still a challenge if we do not think locally none of our activities will be sustainable therefore the challenges and opportunities of globalisation has to be understood and dealt with in the right perspective to ensure that there is no dislocation of our activities which is so crucial to our sustainable development growth,” Sangma said. Topics like inclusive growth, entrepreneurship, innovation and CSR issues, among others will be deliberated upon during the two days’ conference.

Campaign for inclusive society
SHILLONG: Jyoti Sroat School at Bethany Society will celebrate the ‘Include Vidya Campaign’ and the ‘World White Cane Day’ at 1 pm on Saturday on the school campus. The theme of the day is to underline the imperative, the need of the hour, which is to foster an ‘Inclusive Society: A Society for All’ where no one is left behind. ‘Include Vidya’ is CBM’s (Christoffel-Blindenmission) campaign to include children with disabilities in education in India. It aims to highlight the profound challenges faced by children with disabilities in realising their right to education. A 5-km ‘Run for Inclusion’ is being organised where all the diverse participants will come together to embrace differences. The run will start from Don Bosco Square at 6:30 am. ‘The World White Cane Day’ is celebrated all over the world on October 15. Besides, the day will also mark the commencement of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of Jyoti Sroat School, a significant milestone in their journey and their continual pursuit of Total Inclusion. The programme will feature a series of inspiring, insightful and inclusive events such as Café in the Dark, indigenous Food Fest and a Talent Show.

Med trainees’ send-off meeting
SHILLONG: The Director of the State Institute for Rural Development and State Programme Director, DDU-GKY, organised a send-off meeting for the first batch of trainees to Apollo Medskills Ltd, Guwahati, on Monday. The trainees will be trained in dialysis assistant, blood bank technician and emergency medical technician.

Booklet on Jaintia Hills released
JOWAI: A senior journalist from Jaintia Hills, Chaphrang Hiwot Passah – a producer of Myntoilang Cable News (MCN) has raised various issues of Jaintia Hills in a booklet released on Tuesday by veteran journalist MM Thaiang in the presence of renowned columnist Rev. HH Mohrmen.“I wrote this booklet to highlight the people of Jaintia Hills and also for politicians of every political party so that they can at least think about it, for the welfare of the Pnar people,” said CH Passah at the function.
