SHILLONG: In a clear indication that illegal transportation of coal is still going on in the state despite the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ban, Ri Bhoi police on Saturday detained as many as 22 trucks which were transporting coal.
21 trucks were detained in Umling while one truck was detained at the toll plaza. However, most of the truck drivers managed to flee, the police said.
The process of assessing the quantity of the seized coal will take place on Sunday.
In the last few days, a large number of trucks in Ri Bhoi district as well as in East Jaintia Hills have been detained while they were indulging in illegal transportation of coal.
