Camp for intellectually disabled held
AMPATI: A special camp for identification and assessment of persons with intellectual disabilities was held on September 17 at Ampati Mother’s Union SSA School in South West Garo Hills. The Camp was organised by the district unit, SSA in collaboration with the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID), Secunderabad.The camp aimed at identifying persons with intellectual disabilities and assessing the extent of the disability so as to grant them teaching learning materials (TLM) provided free of cost by the government.  Addressing the gathering Dr. Amrita Sahai, Assistant Professor Rehabilitative Psychology i/c Delhi Regional Centre stated that the camp was being held to identify and asses persons with intellectual disabilities so that the NIEPID could recommend the government to provide aids and appliances (educational materials) to the afflicted. She stated that the TLMs cost more than Rs 8,000 per unit and so it was important to properly assess the extent of the disability.

Cop unearths illegal mining
JOWAI: A surprise raid conducted by Amlarem police revealed the practice of coal mining in and around Skentalang area on Tuesday in violation of the NGT ban.The raid was led by sub-divisional police officer, J Mairom. During the raid, police seized several items used for mining, including two motorised water pump machines, two manual water pumps, two air blowers, two large batteries, seven spades, a power drill, 100m electric wires and 100m water pipes.Police however could not remove certain tools and machinery because of their weight and size. 

Intl Rural Women’s Day
SHILLONG: The Bosco Integrated Development Society (BIDS) and Umden Pyllun Integrated Village Cooperative Society, a women SHG society, in collaboration with the Horticulture Department Ri Bhoi district organised a programme to observe International Rural Women’s Day on October 14 at Umden Manipur village in Ri Bhoi district with a call on various government departments, to support rural women engaging in agriculture and farming.The day which was instituted by the United Nations and celebrated on October 15 each year is used to recognize the role of rural women in contributing to improving food security and eradicating rural poverty worldwide.

Ayurveda Day observed
SHILLONG: The 2nd Ayurveda Day was observed in various parts of the city. A programme was held at Rynjah R. R. Colony, Community Hall, Shillong on Tuesday which was attended by Dr. Jemino Mawthoh, MLA, Nongthymmai Constituency. It was organised by the Meghalaya State Ayush Society with the theme “Pain Management through Ayurveda”Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mawthoh said with the introduction of Ayurveda treatment in the State, people will have an alternative form of health care which will improve the overall health well being of the people of the State.The programme was also attended by Dr. (Mrs) M. Horoo, Jt. Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. B. T. Hinge, Ayurvedic Physician Civil Hospital, Jowai, Dr. B. K. Raswai, Homoeopathic Physician, Dr. B. Syiem, incharge of Rynjah State Dispensary, Shri E. War, Rangbah Shnong, Rynjah, Shri A. Das, Secretary, R.R. Colony among others.The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of AYUSH, Mawdiangdiang also organised a day long programme on Tuesday, at NEIAH campus.The programme was based on the theme ‘Pain Management through Ayurveda’. During the programme, eight eminent Ayurvedic physicians and academicians from various North Eastern states were felicitated for their contribution towards propagation of Ayurveda in the region.

150th anniv of teaching centre
SHILLONG: The closing ceremony of Sesquicentennial Celebrations of Cherra Teachers’ Training Centre (CTTC) was held on Tuesday at Sohra which was attended by Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma as the chief guest while Principal Secretary of Education, D P Wahlang was the guest of honour. Speaking to the gathering, Sangma informed that the government has tried to align different programmes and interventions to live up to the name and fame of the state as the centre of Education adding that the government has to facilitate and create an enabling environment for Education to promote quality and higher education to equip our children to ultimately become a member of the global community capable of competing at the global scale. “There is an need to motivate the youth to look at teaching and the Education sector as a viable sustainable space not only for imparting quality Education but also for creating entrepreneurship and job opportunities”, Sangma said. The chief minister also released the celebration Souvenir during the occasion.

Shullai lays base for road project
SHILLONG: MLA Sanbor Shullai unveiled the foundation stone for construction of motorable road from Kenches Trace road near Laban Assamese Girls Secondary School up to St John’s Higher Secondary School, Madan Laban which was sanctioned under PWD department 2017-18 for an amount of Rs. 1.01 crore. The MCIC in collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong of Madan Laban – Riat Laban, St John’s Higher Secondary School and Assamese Girls Secondary School, organised the inauguration function of the newly constructed PWD road on October 16. The scheme was planned, initiated and recommended by Sanbor Shullai. The function was presided over by H B Wahlang, president of Seng Rangbah St John’s Parish, in the presence of other officials and residents of the area. Shullai during his speech suggested and requested the members of the MCIC to monitor all the projects with cordial relationship and in collaboration with the officials of various departments to ensure best quality of works for the benefits, welfare and interest of the general public of 19th South Shillong constituency.

Gandhian values in focus
SHILLONG: The Mahatma Gandhi University, Meghalaya organised a Special Lecture on ”The Relevance of Gandhian Values in the 21st Century” on October 16. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Archana Barua, Professor in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati, Assam.The event preceded with the inauguration of “Centre for Value Studies”. Then the Vice-Chancellor (i/c), Dr. Mohan Bhattacharya of MGU delivered the welcome address. In his address he explored the need of value education, ethics and morality for intellectual development. In her deliberation Prof. Barua discussed about the Gandhian principles and its relevance to the present scenario. She also explored how Gandhian ideologies can be followed in the 21st century and forwarded the point that value can be taught but it is the matter of self-realisation.

Restriction on fire crackers 
SHILLONG: The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills district, has informed that in connection with the upcoming Kali Puja and Deepawali festivities, the people are to strictly comply with the conditions that is provided. In a statement, the office of the District Magistrate has asked people to adhere to the guidelines laid down by the Apex Court of India dated July 18, 2005 – Prevention of Environment and Sound Pollution Vrs Union of India and others.It has also informed people of the city on the Government notification dated October 25, 2005 on the sale/purchase and bursting of fireworks/crackers having noise level exceeding 125 dB (A1) or 145 dB (C) pk at 4 meters distance from the point of bursting is prohibited expect other types of tarabati and tubri without sound, joined firecrackers, the limit of sound be reduced by 5 log 10(N) dB, from 125 dB(Al) or 145 dB(C) where N is number of crackers joined together. It also cautioned against bursting of crackers in public places, silence zones and other sensitive areas like educational institutions, hospitals, courts, religious places, government offices etc.

Residents request to stop inauguration of police station
SHILLONG: A section of the residents of Diengpasoh, Mawryngkneng have objected to the inauguration of Diengpasoh Police Station/Out-post citing lack of transparency and confidence of the Durbar Shnong and the general public of Diengpasoh. In a letter to the Secretary (Home) and Secretary of Social Welfare Department, the president and secretary of Seng Bhalang ki Longkmie of Diengpasoh (SBLD), P. War and Sidramon Mukhim respectively, have requested the officials to stop the inauguration of the Diengpasoh Police Station/ Police Outpost. Maintaining that the organisation had made repeated objection to the opening of the police station, they requested the officials to look into the matter and to call a general durbar to avoid confusion.In the letter to the government officials dated October 17, the SBLD comprising of women have alleged that the headman of Diengpasoh village is working with the government in personal capacity “in a very dubious manner” without their consent and the general public.The organisation also raised concerns on the land acquisition process for the site where the Police Station/Police Outpost is to be inaugurated.They alleged that the authorities are trying to inaugurate the police station to occupy the land illegally.

Mondal condoles death of former MLA
SHILLONG: A T Mondal, Speaker, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has condoled the death of Herbert Suchiang, former Minister of Meghalaya and MLA from Raliang constituency. On behalf of all the members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, the Speaker has expressed grief and sadness on his passing away while recalling Suchiang’s contribution in the debates inside the House, his role as the government Chief Whip, and his services to the people of the state.

Bijoya Sammilan organised
SHILLONG: Geetali, a socio cultural organisation situated at Laban, organised a ‘Bijoya Sarmilan’ on October 15 where members of the organisation took part in various programmes. On October 28, Geetali is organising a (Late) Professor Romen Das Memorial Debate and Quiz Competition, 2017. The organisation will send an invitation to all schools and colleges of the state for participation. The competition will be held at Kailash Kar Manch , Laban.Established in the year 1994 for the motive of promotion of art and culture, Geetali organises annual programmes like Rabindra Jayanti , Medical Camp, etc.

Robber caught
SHILLONG: A complaint was lodged on October 15 around 3.45 pm by Elton C Warjri that ,one Shankar Rai (30) who was moving suspiciously at Lachumiere, Shillong was apprehended by the local residents. On checking his gunny bag they detected one car tape, one hack saw blade, one syringe, etc. Police arrested the accused.
