SHILLONG: Former Congress leader Rowell Lyngdoh, who broke his ties with the Congress recently, will join the National People’s Party (NPP) after the next Assembly session.
“We are waiting for the last Assembly session before we switch over to NPP,” he said.
Lyngdoh said on Friday the Congress would not lose the elections easily as they have built the Congress party strongly in the constituency.
“It will be a triangular fight in Mawkyrwat between Congress, NPP and regional parties,” he said when asked about the chances of NPP in Mawkyrwat.
Admitting that there are many people in the constituency who love the Congress, the veteran leader added that NPP would be a force in this year’s election as it would emerge as the single largest party.
When asked about NPP’s close ties with BJP, he said the parties were not close but added that NPP would have some relation with BJP at the Centre if it forms the government in future.
The MLA from Mawkyrwat who is one of the senior most politicians in the state added that the party would take the call on the chief ministerial candidate after the elections are over.
“I can say that the Ministry will be shared between Khasis, Jaintias and Garos,” he said.
Rowell Lyngdoh was the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Law, Election, Water Resources, Soil and Water Conservation in the State Cabinet but he was dropped from the State Cabinet last year.
