TURA: Police recovered almost the entire amount of cash stolen from an ATM kiosk at Tura super market this week following the arrest of four persons connected to the private company engaged in putting cash into the machine vaults.
The accused, Vijay Debnath, who hailed from Dhubri town in Assam, was the company man responsible for filling the cash vaults of ATM machines.
Tura police arrested him and three others for the heist that took place on Tuesday night.
The stolen money amounting to over Rs 38 lakh was kept hidden in the house of one of the prime suspects at Nakhma Bazar locality of the town.
The gang had stolen Rs 39,86,400 and left behind Rs 1.5 lakh in their hurry.
When police raided the Nakham Bazaar house rented by Vijay on Saturday afternoon they found the money hidden in a sack. They recovered Rs 38,41,500 of the stolen cash.
Police sources said Vijay managed to obtain the password of another employee before cracking the ATM vaults.
The breakthrough came within days of another gang falling under the Tura police net.
Two members of a criminal group who took away Rs 25 lakh from a bank employee near DC office and tried to escape to Dhubri were arrested and the money was recovered.
The Regional Business Office of State Bank of India in Tura organised a felicitation programme for Meghalaya police, particularly West Garo Hills district police led by Superintendent of Police M G R Kumar, for their excellent service in rendering security.
The SBI DGM from Shillong, Rajeeb Arora, and AGM Tura Sanjeeb Kr Dev along with other officials felicitated the Tura SP and his team as well as two telecom employees of Reliance Jio and Aircel.
