JOWAI: West Jaintia Hills police detected two coal-laden trucks at Phramer (8th Mile) on Saturday night. The two trucks bearing Assam registration numbers were owned by Kalip Suchiang and Pawan Kumar Mishra from Mootyrshiah and Guwahati, respectively.
The coal that was being transported in the two trucks belonged to Suchiang.
Mining and transportation of coal continue clandestinely in East Jaintia Hills despite the National Green Tribunal ban, a police officer from the district has confirmed.
The officer said they are busy going from one place to another to check illegal mining.
Coal is being transported in trucks which are covered with tarpaulin and planks, making it difficult to detect.
The East Jaintia Hills police deployed at Shohshrieh, bordering the western district, have so far not detected any illegal truck though they were deployed 24 hours. It is the West Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi police who always detain coal-laden trucks.
