SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has sought support from non tribal voters of Lower and Upper Jail Road under the Shillong North constituency.
KHNAM working president, Adelbert Nongrum, in an apparent attempt to woo the non tribal electorate, met 200-odd residents of Jail Road at Bangiya Sahitya Parishad on Sunday and highlighted the objectives and ideologies of the regional party.
Nongrum, who is set to contest the Assembly elections, said, “I approached only genuine non-tribals. I feel that we need to work together for the betterment of the future.”
“The people have assured to work hand in hand. They are also affected by influx. They said they did not understand the ideology of KHNAM and took it to be an anti-non tribal party but it is not so,” he said.
Nongrum said he has also assured them that the party would work together after the elections.
“The turnout was good and the response from the people positive,” the convener of today’s meeting, Noor Basher Khan said.
“This is a party that is trying to come together for the development of the state as a whole, which is a good sign,” he said.
According to him, people here don’t believe in political parties and the first preference is the candidate if he/she was up to the mark.
Khan said this was the first meeting of the party and that the party would go door-to door at Jail Road, Oakland and Police Bazar to seek support for Nongrum.
