SHILLONG: Sadar Police Station has implemented the provisions of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010, in letter and spirit and registered cases against 48 persons, besides registering 16 cases under Section 110, in October alone.
Earlier, the jurisdiction of Section 110 of the Act was to enable police to deal with cases of public nuisance in rural areas.
After a notification issued under Section 101 of the Act by East Khasi Hills SP Davis NR Marak, the police ensured that the instruction issued with regard to littering is complied with in true spirit.
Sadar police station also arrested 70 persons for littering and registered 21 cases under Section 102 of the Meghalaya Police Act.
“We urge the public to come forward to assist cops in keeping the city clean,” the police said.
Meanwhile, the Act also has a provision where the officer handling such cases will get a certain amount from the fine realised from the defaulters and the matter is likely to be taken up with the state government shortly so as to encourage all officers to take up such cases.
